What Is a Sinus Infection?
A sinus infection — also called sinusitis or acute rhinosinusitis (ARS) — is an inflammation of the sinuses typically caused by a virus or bacteria.
When fluid builds up in the air-filled cavities around your nose and eyes, it creates an environment where germs can grow, leading to infection. This can prevent your sinuses from effectively clearing out mucus, dust, and debris, resulting in pressure and pain.
Common Sinus Infection Symptoms
Facial pain or pressure, especially around the eyes, forehead, and cheeks

About Sinus Infection
What’s the Best Medicine for Sinusitis?
The most effective treatment for sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses) depends on the underlying cause — most often, it’s viral. Since viral sinus infections don’t respond to antibiotics, your iVisitDoc provider may recommend symptom relief through over-the-counter (OTC) medications such as:
Nasal saline sprays or rinses
Nasal steroid sprays (e.g. fluticasone or mometasone)
Decongestants or pain relievers
If your symptoms — like sinus pressure, nasal congestion, or headache — have lasted less than a week, it may be too early to determine whether the infection is viral or bacterial. In this case, your provider may take a watchful waiting approach, offering supportive care first.
If symptoms persist beyond 10 days or worsen after initial improvement, it may be a bacterial infection, and your provider might prescribe an antibiotic, such as amoxicillin-clavulanate
