A sinus infection — also called sinusitis or acute rhinosinusitis (ARS) — is an inflammation of the sinuses typically caused by a virus or bacteria.

About Sinus Infection

The most effective treatment for sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses) depends on the underlying cause — most often, it’s viral. Since viral sinus infections don’t respond to antibiotics, your iVisitDoc provider may recommend symptom relief through over-the-counter (OTC) medications such as:

  • Nasal saline sprays or rinses

  • Nasal steroid sprays (e.g. fluticasone or mometasone)

  • Decongestants or pain relievers

If your symptoms — like sinus pressure, nasal congestion, or headache — have lasted less than a week, it may be too early to determine whether the infection is viral or bacterial. In this case, your provider may take a watchful waiting approach, offering supportive care first.

If symptoms persist beyond 10 days or worsen after initial improvement, it may be a bacterial infection, and your provider might prescribe an antibiotic, such as amoxicillin-clavulanate
